Don't let your computer crash your business!

Don't let your computer crash your business! Don't let your computer crash your business!

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

If you've used a computer in the last 30 years, you've probably encountered this situation at least once yourself. And these days, we heavily rely on computers for running our businesess, tackling everything from payment processing and invoicing, to content creation, to data processing and tracking and client relationship management which means that having a functional technology system has never been more critical. Glitches, broken software updates, hardware failures, viruses and spyware can quickly derail your productivity, and if you don't have the know-how to diagnose or repair the problem, these could also bring your business operations to a grinding halt resulting in lost revenue and negatively impacting your customer relationships. And especially as a small business, we know you can't afford to jeopardize what you're building over a missed software update or out-of-date driver.

So, how do you keep your computer in good working order? Here are some Do's and Dont's to help keep your tech working for you:

DO conduct regular physical cleaning andmaintenance. Blow out dust, wipe away crumbs, make sure the filters on your fans are clear and only use proper screen cleaner with a soft cloth on your monitor.

DON'T put too much stress on the ports and cables. Keep cables running as straight as possible and be gentle when plugging in/taking out chargers and USB devices.

DO manage your battery's health. Monitor your useage, select an appropriate battery saver mode when you can and when it's time to replace it, buy an official manufacturer-approved option.

DON'T let your computer get too hot. Heat is the enemy of of most electronics, slowing down or frying processors and other components and significantly reducing the overall lifespan of your machine.

DO browse the web safely. Ensure you have an up-to-date anti-virus running on your computer, schedule consistent scans (both quick scans and full system scans), only visit trusted websites, and avoid suspicious links and attachments in emails. Protect your personal data even further by using a password manager and keep your wifi network secure with a WPA2 password.

DON'T let your software, operating system and drivers get out-of-date. As annoying as those little pop-ups might be, don't ignore them - your computer system requires regular updates to patch vulnerabilities and improve services, which keep you and your data safer and programs operating more efficiently.

But even if you've taken all of these steps and followed them to the letter, problems with your computer may still arise which can be extremely frustrating. Computers are complex devices and it's always best to seek professional computer repair assistance before you try to macgyver a solution which may ultimately render your computer inoperable.
